Extraction Review

Director: Sam Hargrave
Starring: Chris Hemsworth, Rudhraksh Jaiswal, Randeep Hooda, Golshifteh Farahani, Pankaj Tripathi, Priyanshu Painyuli and David Harbour

There’s a new movie which has landed on Netflix this week.

I’m not sure if you’ve heard of it. It’s called Extraction.

I know. Extraction does sound like a movie that would star Bruce Willis and could come out straight to DVD.

Actually, Extraction was a movie starring Bruce Willis that was released straight to DVD back in 2015.

However, this Extraction movie is slightly different.

This movie comes from the Russo Brothers. It was produced by both of them and it was written by Joe Russo.

He was working off a story idea by Ande Parks and his brother Anthony.

This is the second movie that the Russo Brothers have produced since making Avengers: Endgame, the first being 21 Bridges.

I will state right here that Extraction is the far better movie.

The movie stars Marvel Studios’ very own Chris Hemsworth and he plays a mercenary called Tyler Rakes (I know, what an incredible action movie name).

He’s obviously a troubled individual and he’s brought in to extract the teenage son of an Indian drug lord.

The son’s been kidnapped by a rival drug lord and is being held in Dhaka in Bangladesh.

So, this is where all the action starts and the action in this movie is incredible.

The movie’s directed by Sam Hargrave and he’s worked as a stunt man and was a stunt coordinator on the Russo Brothers’ Marvel movies.

He’s worked on movies such as Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Endgame.

Hargrave’s background as a stunt man and stunt coordinator is pretty evident in Extraction.

Some of the action set pieces in this movie are breathtaking.

There’s an eleven-minute-long action set piece in this film which I believe is one of the best set pieces I’ve ever seen in a movie.

It brought to mind some of the set pieces in the John Wick and recent Mission: Impossible movies.

However, the film falls flat as far as its plot and character development is concerned.

The plot is very basic, but then again, I think that’s deliberate.

Hargraves and the Russo Brothers know that they don’t want people to focus on Extraction’s plot.

This movie is all about the action set pieces.

That said, I would have liked to have seen more character development.

The kidnapped son, for instance, called Ovi (played by Rudhraksh Jaiswal) gets nothing to do really.

David Harbour pops up for a minute and then is gone the next.

I would have liked to have seen more from Golshifteh Farahani as Nik Khan, who’s character is interesting but gets very little to do.

That said, Randeep Hooda who plays Saju in the movie is incredible.

I think his character might be the most interesting one in the movie and he gets a bit of backstory as well as being brilliantly captivating in his action set pieces.

Chris Hemsworth delivers a fine performance

As I mentioned earlier, there’s not much character development in Extraction.

That said, there is a bit to Hemsworth’s character that lets him do some actual acting.

First off, he’s great in the action sequences, but he’s pretty used to doing that sort of thing now.

It’s when things slow down and you start to discover a bit more about Tyler Rake’s backstory that Hemsworth gets to also flex his acting muscles.

That said, it’s all pretty corny. He’s troubled and has lost a family member.

Pretty standard action movie tropes right there.

However, Hemsworth does well in the role, and I think it’s far better than anything he’s done outside of the MCU.

All that aside, Extraction is really only a movie that you’ll enjoy if you’re into action movies.

I watched the film with my wife and she really didn’t get much out of the movie.

However, I would argue that’s in the film’s best interests.

It knows what it is and it also knows who its audience is.

It’s an action movie and tries to do everything it can to make sure it’s action set pieces are as visceral as they could be.

Sam Hargrave and co. succeeded in doing this because Extraction’s set pieces are genuinely staggering.
