Blade Runner 2049 is Getting Very Positive Early Reviews

Blade Runner 2049 is only a few days from release yet critics have already been taking to Twitter to post some very positive early thoughts on Denis Villeneuve’s sequel to Ridley Scott’s classic film.

Blade Runner wasn’t very well received when it fist came out, however it’s widely recognised nowadays as being a true classic. When the idea of making a sequel was bandied about, naturally people were rather worried. Previous Ridley Scott sequels haven’t gone down too well, namely Prometheus and even Alien: Covenant. However, when it was announced that Denis Villeneuve would be helming the project (Blade Runner 2049 as it became known) and that Hampton Fancher would be writing the screenplay (he wrote the original screenplay for Blade Runner), then people started to sit up and take notice.

We then learned that Harrison Ford would be returning as Rick Deckard and that Ryan Gosling would be the film’s lead. Add other big names like Jared Leto, Robin Wright and Guardians of the Galaxy’s Dave Bautista to the mix, you’ve got a real winner on your hands. However, for me it’s Villeneuve’s involvement which excites me the most about this Blade Runner sequel. His back-catalogue is already highly impressive: PolytechniqueIncendiesPrisonersEnemy (arguably his worst film, and it’s still pretty interesting), Sicario and most recently, Arrival.

Arrival was my favourite film of 2016. It literally brought me to tears and I genuinely thought that Amy Adams deserved the Oscar for her remarkably performance. Yet, she didn’t even get nominated. Typical. The Academy gets it wrong again. Anyway, Villeneuve is easily one of the most interesting directors working in Hollywood today. His name would be among those of Christopher Nolan, Guillermo Del Toro, David Fincher, Quentin Tarantino, Alfonso Cuarón, Alejandro González Iñárritu, Kathryn Bigelow and Edgar Wright for me personally.

Blade Runner 2049 doesn’t come out for the British general public until October 5th, however, critics have already seen the film (lucky buggers), and are hard at work on their reviews. But, before writing their full critical/analytical prose, many of the UK’s and the US’ most famous critics took to Twitter to display their early reactions to having watched Villeneuve’s latest picture. Check them out below.

So, if these critics are to be taken seriously – and some of them are very serious, just look at The Guardians’ Peter Bradshaw and the UK’s most trusted film critic, Mark Kermode, for evidence of that fact – then it looks like Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049 is something very special. This is all very positive and has me extremely excited to see the film for myself. However, I just hope they haven’t overhyped the movie.
