Annihilation’s New Featurette Shows Some Genuinely Creepy New Footage

There’s a new featurette for Alex Garland’s upcoming movie, Annihilation, and it shows some genuinely creepy stuff. Check it out here.

Oh boy! I can’t begin to tell you how excited I am for Alex Garland’s Annihilation. The film is based on Jeff VanderMeer novel which is the first part of a series of three books called the Southern Reach Trilogy. I read the first book last year in preparation for this movie, and I’m going to be completely honest, I understood very little of it.

All I can say is that it left me feeling confused, upset and very much creeped out. It is beautifully written, but I think it’s the kind of book that requires multiple reads. Perhaps Garland’s film will be very similar in that sense. One’s thing for sure, the film seems a lot more action-packed than the book is, and also full of terrifying monsters and visuals.

Annihilation will be Alex Garland’s second time in the director’s chair, although it is rumoured that he directed most of the Dredd movie. His first film, Ex Machina, was in my eyes a modern sci-fi horror masterpiece and I’m hoping that Annihilation will be yet another stellar piece of work from the writer-turned-director.

Rather disappointingly, the film will not get a wide UK cinematic release and will instead be dropped on Netflix a few days after its US premiere. That said, it does mean that Garland’s film will be made readily available to more people. However, this does look like the sort of film that should be seen on the biggest screen possible.

Annihilation stars Natalie Portman who’s only ever referred to as the Biologist and tells the story of how a group of researchers ventures into an uninhabited area known as Area X. They don’t know what’s inside, only that the area is spreading and that things aren’t quite right inside this place. Things are mutating and changing, and people are disappearing. Sounds pretty spooky to me.

Annihilation is coming to US cinemas on February 23rd, 2018 and will be released on Netflix for international markets a few days later.
