Alex Garland Shares His Thoughts On Annihilation Being Released On Netflix

Annihilation’s director, Alex Garland, has shared his thoughts on his film being omitted from a cinema release in the UK and heading to Netflix instead.

I was really, really bummed to hear that Annihilation will not be getting a cinema release in the UK and will be heading to Netflix a few days after its US premiere instead. It really sucks because this promises to be one of the best sci-fi films of the year and it’s the sort of movie that deserves to be viewed on a big screen. Not only that, but Alex Garland is easily one of the most talented and exciting directors working in Hollywood today. His directorial debut, Ex Machina, was proof of that.

Alas, we won’t be seeing Annihilation on the big screen here in the UK and will have to make do with that fact. Yet, the director spoke to Collider about the whole thing and he had one or two things to say about the whole situation. “Disappointment really,” answered Garland, when he was asked to express his feelings on Annihilation being robbed of a cinema release in all territories apart from the US, Canada and China.

“We made the film for cinema. I’ve got no problem with the small screen at all. The best genre piece I’ve seen in a long time was The Handmaid’s Tale, so I think there’s incredible potential within that context, but if you’re doing that – you make it for that [format] and you think of it in those terms.”

“It is what it is,” Garland reflected. “The film is getting a theatrical release in the States, which I’m really pleased about. One of the big pluses of Netflix is that it goes out to a lot of people and you don’t have that strange opening weekend thing where you’re wondering if anyone is going to turn up and then if they don’t, it vanishes from cinema screens in two weeks.”

He finished off the interview by adding: “From my point of view and the collective of the people who made it – [it was made] to be seen on a big screen.” It’s just a bit of a rubbish situation, not only for us but also for Garland himself. I’m sure he would have loved to come to the movie’s premiere in his home country, the UK, but sadly it looks like that won’t happen.

Annihilation will be coming to cinemas in the US on the 23rd of February and will available to stream on Netflix in March.
