Wonder Woman is Set To Be Summer 2017’s Biggest Box Office Hit

Wonder Woman is gearing up to be this summer’s biggest box office hit, beating Dunkirk, War for the Planet of the Apes and Transformers: The Last Knight.

Wonder Woman’s been taking no prisoners at the box office. Not only did the film turn out to be the very best we’ve seen from the DCEU so far, it also made a heck of a lot of money at the box office. According to Box Office Mojo, Patty Jenkins’ film as made an impressive $813.1 million worldwide, and it currently stands as the fifth highest grossing superhero movie in the United States, behind The Dark Knight Rises, Avengers: Age of Ultron, The Dark Knight and The Avengers. Wonder Woman is also all set to become this summer’s highest grossing movie, fending off competition from the likes of Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk, War for the Planet of the ApesPirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales and Michael Bay’s Transformers: The Last Knight.

Wonder Woman managed to make $409.4 million in the US alone, making it 2017’s second highest grossing movie after Beauty and the Beast. All of this is no mean feat considering the fact that before Patty Jenkins’ film Hollywood Studio Executives were very dubious about making female lead superhero films since in their minds they made no money, citing films such as Elektra and Catwoman as examples of this, forgetting that their poor box office records was down to the fact they they were bad films and not because they were female lead.

Wonder Woman has been kicking everyone's butt at this summer's box office.

Warner Bros. must be very pleased indeed with Wonder Woman’s positive reception, not just due to its incredible box office takings, but also since it was the DCEU’s first film to be well received by both critics and moviegoers. Up until this point, the DCEU has been in tatters after the beating that Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad both received critically and from cinema audiences. It’s safe to say that the vast majority of people were not too impressed with the direction that the DCEU was taking. Wonder Woman on the other hand was a breath of fresh air. It was promoting positive ideals and Gal Gadot’s Diana Prince is a superhero who actually wants to save people, as opposed to brutish and selfish individuals who are either constantly contemplating their own existence or brooding over the death of their parents.

Warner Bros. has had a pretty good summer. Not only did Wonder Woman and Dunkirk perform well at the box office, but Annabelle: Creation also made an impressive $90.5 million at the US box office, going against the current trend of sequel fatigue we’ve been seeing this year.
