War for the Planet of the Apes’ New Trailer Teases the End of Caesar

War for the Planet of the Apes’ first official trailer has been released and it seems like the film could mark the end of Caesar, and possibly humankind itself. Check it out below.

The Planet of the Apes franchise has undergone a dramatic rejuvenation over the last few years. We’ve seen two very good movies in Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. Now it’s time for full blown WAR in the third, and possibly final, film in the franchise, War for the Planet of the Apes.

War for the Planet of the Apes is being directed by Matt Reeves, who took over from Rupert Wyatt on Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and did an incredible job with the tentpole franchise. Before taking on the job, he’d only directed Cloverfield, which was already pretty impressive. The first film was a lot smaller in scale, and Reeves managed to beef up the franchise with his film, Rise of the Planet of the Apes. It looks like he’s going to step it up yet again in the third Apes film. War for the Planet of the Apes might not mark the end of the franchise, I’m not sure yet whether 20th Century Fox will want to make more or leave it as a trilogy, but it looks like it might be the end for Andy Serkis’ Caesar.

It’s WAR in War for the Planet of the Apes!

Serkis’ performance throughout these movies has been sensational, worthy of an Oscar in my book, but he’s been sadly overlooked. The Academy’s blindness to motion-capture performances aside, Serkis’ work has been recognised by the critics, and I for one can’t wait to see what he does in War for the Planet of the Apes, which is why I put the movie in my list of blockbusters to look forward to in 2017. Pitting Serkis against Woody Harrelson is a masterstroke and I’m eager to see what happens when their characters come face to face. If the trailer’s anything to go by, it’ll be a memorable scene.

War for the Planet of the Apes will be in cinemas in the UK on July 14th, 2017.
