Thor: Ragnarok’s Taika Waititi Explains Why He Changed The Location In The Hela Hammer Scene

Taika Waititi has explained why they decided to change the location of the scene in which Hela ruthlessly destroy’s Thor’s hammer in the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok.

Remember that scene in the very first trailer for Thor: Ragnarok in which Hela obliterates Thor’s hammer? More specifically, do you remember where that scene took place? It was in an alleyway in a city not unlike New York City. However, recent teaser trailer and promos have shown that scene taking place in a field (apparently in Norway). What? Is Hela going to destroy Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir, twice in exactly the same way, just in different locations? No. No, she’s not. Taika Waititi was on-hand to explain why he decided to change the location in which that scene takes place.

During an interview with Digital Spy, Thor: Ragnarok’s director explained why he wanted to change that scene. “Here’s the thing, alleyways aren’t cool, and fields are cool. Ask anyone,” jokes Waititi. However, he went to explain in a bit more detail why they really opted to change that scene (WARNING: Minor plot SPOILERS to follow):

“We originally shot some of that stuff on the set of our stuff in New York,” Waititi said. “What we wanted to do was have them go down to Earth and they see Doctor Strange and stuff but it felt too convenient that he was suddenly just down the road in an alley and also everything, up to then, everything was so fast-paced and all over the place. We wanted to go somewhere peaceful and actually chill out with those characters and be with Odin while he imparts this wisdom and stuff and not have to hear stupid yellow cabs honking out the back.”

“It just felt like a terrible environment to have a scene that could be very emotional for what happens with Odin and the boys, and the first time we’ve seen the three guys all together, and him telling them he loves them and acknowledging Loki as his son,” Waititi said. “It was just very important for us to be in a beautiful peaceful environment.”

It seems to make sense, in that case, to change the location of that scene from a nondescript New York alleyway to a beautiful and tranquil field in Norway. It’s far more symbolic and much better-suited to the action itself. Mjolnir can’t just be destroyed in some random alleyway.
