Super Mario Odyssey’s Trailer Teases the Mario Game We’ve All Been Waiting For

Nintendo revealed their latest Super Mario game at last night’s Nintendo Switch conference, Super Mario Odyssey, and it looks like the Mario game we’ve all wanted them to make for years!

I’m going to come out and say it, I love everything about Nintendo, even during the dark years; the Wii U era has certainly been a pretty dark period for those wacky Japanese game designers. However, with the Nintendo Switch on the horizon, things seem to be looking up, especially since we now know that the console will launch with a brand new Mario title, Super Mario Odyssey. It’s a return to the 3D Mario gaming I came to love when I first played Super Mario 64 on the Nintendo 64, which incidentally was also my first ever gaming console. I cannot wait to play this game. Check out Super Mario Odyssey’s trailer below in all its glory.

There’s nothing better than playing a good Mario game, as many people have found out recently with the release of Super Mario Run on iOS. There’s something charming and ludicrously addictive about making the little Italian plumber jump over obstacles, on strange enemies’ heads and down green pipes. I wish I had been present when Shigeru Miyamoto first pitched his idea for Super Mario Bros. to his peers at Nintendo, just to hear the stunned silence there must have been in the room.

Mario’s an institution, everybody recognises the character and I’m so glad to see that Nintendo is aiming high with his next game. I love the art style, the contrasting art styles, the different settings (including New Donk City!), and the fact that it takes place in a 3D world. I was starting to get a bit tired of 2D Mario games. Super Mario Odyssey looks like a mixture of Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2. More than that, if this trailer is anything to go by, it feels like the next chapter in Mario’s already very long story, and has been described by The Verge as “an open world sandbox game for Nintendo Switch.” What more could you ask for?

Super Mario Odyssey is currently scheduled for a holiday 2017 release, let’s hope they stick to that.
