Star Wars: The Last Jedi’s John Boyega Would Like Finn To Be More Boba Fett And Less Jedi

Star Wars: The Last Jedi’s star, John Boyega, thinks it would be cooler if Finn ends up being more like Boba Fett and less like a Jedi.

WARNING: Possible SPOILERS for The Last Jedi to follow.

After seeing Finn pick up Luke’s lightsaber in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and then put up a decent fight against Adam Driver’s Kylo Ren, I thought it would be cool to uncover that the ex-Stormtrooper is actually Force Sensitive. There are a lot of roads this new Star War saga could go down and this was one of the more popular theories on the Internet. People seemed to really connect with John Boyega’s character and we want to find out more about him. However, it looks like we might get to see a Force Sensitive Finn after all.

During an interview with Digital Spy, Boyega was asked whether he’d like Finn to become a Jedi, the actor delivered a pretty significant blow to our hopes. Here’s what he had to say on the matter:

“Would I like to be a Jedi? I think it would be more interesting if they had more than one person be a Jedi – but I think that that is the one of the unspoken laws of Star Wars. They only have one who has to go away and train[.]

We know that the one person who’ll train as a Jedi is going to be Rey, so dismissing the multiple Jedi theory does rather put a lid on that idea. That’s not to say Finn can’t rise to be an equally interesting kind of hero in Last Jedi.

I hope it takes an interesting turn; not in terms of being a Jedi, but there are loads more stronger characters in the Star Wars universe that can go up against Jedi and they don’t necessarily have to be a Jedi[.]

I would like to explore that more; the whole Boba Fett vibe. I would like to explore that for Finn, but who knows?”

Even though Boyega’s words dash our hopes of seeing Finn learning the ways in the Force, I really do like the idea of a Boba Fett-esque version of Finn. We already know that he’s a skilled fighter and it would be interesting to see him learn how to fight like Boba Fett did. Even though Fett seemingly came to an end in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, his survival from that nasty Sarlacc is now officially considered canon thanks to the Star Wars: Battlefront video game.

Not everybody has to become a Jedi in this new saga, and if Luke’s words in The Last Jedi’s trailer are anything to go by, this movie might not feature any Jedi at all. We might witness the birth of something completely new as far as Force wielders are concerned. Perhaps the beginning of something akin to the Grey Jedi from the non-canonical Star Wars books.

Yet, moving back to Finn, we know that he’ll be battling Captain Phasma in The Last Jedi. Maybe he’s learned a trick or two from studying Boba Fett’s fighting style and hopefully he’ll give the Chrome Trooper, and us, a fight to remember.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi will be in UK cinemas on December 14th. What do you think of Finn not being a Jedi? Let us know in the comments below.
