Star Wars: The Last Jedi’s Andy Serkis Dishes More Details On Supreme Leader Snoke

Andy Serkis has offered us some more details about his character in Star War: The Last Jedi, Supreme Leader Snoke, and gives us a little bit more information on his motivations and backstory.

WARNING: There are Star Wars: The Last Jedi SPOILERS in this article.

Andy Serkis is easily one of the best actors working in Hollywood today. His turns as Golem in both The Lord of The Rings and The Hobbit movies and Caesar in the Planet of the Apes movies are proof enough of that fact. He’s also appeared in Avengers: Age of Ultron as Ulysses Klaue (we’ll be seeing him again in Black Panther). However, he was left a bit shortchanged in Star Wars: The Force Awakens as the mysterious villain, Supreme Leader Snoke. We’d like to know a little bit more about his character and we might get to find out some more of his backstory in Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Andy Serkis opened up about Snoke during an interview with Entertainment Weekly. He described Snoke as “a cruel master” and went on to say that he’s a  “9-foot-tall alien humanoid who disparages and dominates his two lieutenants: Kylo Ren (played by Adam Driver) and General Hux (Domhnall Gleeson.) He’s a predator who identifies weakness and exploits it, drawing the young and promising to his side with promises of power, then using and discarding his protégés when they are no longer of use.”

Serkis went on to describe Snoke’s difficult relationship with Kylo Ren. “His training of Kylo Ren is not yielding what he wants,” he said. “Therefore his anger towards Kylo Ren is intensified because he can’t bear weakness in others. Part of the manipulation is goading him with Hux and playing them off against each other.”

Serkis also revealed that Snoke is indeed a Force wielder. There’s been quite a bit of debate about this online, however, The Last Jedi’s trailers have basically confirmed that fact. “The thing about Snoke is that he is extremely strong with the Force, the dark side of the Force,” revealed Serkis. “He’s terribly powerful, of course. But he is also a very vulnerable and wounded character. He has suffered and he has suffered injury. The way that his malevolence comes out is in reaction to that. His hatred of the Resistance is fueled by what’s happened to him personally.”

Snoke is playing these two off of one another.

Then there’s the physicality of Snoke. So far we’ve only seen him via a giant hologram. We’ve never actually met the villain in the flesh. He prefers to operate in the shadows. However, he will be drawn out in The Last Jedi and Serkis described Snoke’s physical presence in the movie. “You witness his physicality. His body is kind of twisted up like a corkscrew, and so he has limited movement. His aggression and his anger is contained and restricted by that physicality,” he said.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi will be in UK cinemas on December 14th. Have you bought your tickets yet?
