Colin Trevorrow is No Longer Directing Star Wars: Episode IX

In yet another surprise move, Lucasfilm has just announced that Colin Trevorrow will not be directing Star Wars: Episode IX.

It seems like an age ago when Colin Trevorrow was announced as the director of Star Wars: Episode IX, however, in an unprecedented move, Lucasfilm revealed yesterday via a post on the Star Wars website that he will no longer be directing the third and final film in this new Star Wars trilogy. They stated that their “visions for the project differ.”

This is not the first time that Lucasfilm decided to part ways with their movies’ directors. Phil Lord and Chris Miller also left their Star Wars Han Solo project citing “creative differences” as the reason behind the split, and Josh Trank dropped out of the Star Wars spinoff project that he was set to helm.

Here’s Lucasfilm’s full statement regarding Colin Trevorrow exiting Star Wars: Episode IX: “Lucasfilm and Colin Trevorrow have mutually chosen to part ways on Star Wars: Episode IX. Colin has been a wonderful collaborator throughout the development process but we have all come to the conclusion that our visions for the project differ. We wish Colin the best and will be sharing more information about the film soon.”

After Trevorrow’s exit, Rian Johnson has become the favourite to replace him. He’s currently hard at work on post-production for Star Wars: The Last Jedi and seems to have a very good working relationship with Disney, Lucasfilm, and more importantly Kathleen Kennedy. He has stated his interest in directing a second Star Wars movie, tweeting: “I would do another SW movie in a heartbeat. I’ve had the time of my life.”

However, other names have come up as well. Naturally J.J. Abrams’ name has been bandied about, yet people have also mentioned names such as Ava DuVernay, Ryan Coogler, Patty Jenkins and Barry Jenkins. It would be nice to move away from white male directors for once.

Trevorrow demonstrated that he’s a very talented director with his first feature length film Safety Not Guaranteed and then followed that up with the huge blockbuster hit that was Jurassic World, yet his latest film, The Book of Henry, didn’t receive the positive reviews he would have been hoping for.
