Star Wars Director Rian Johnson Explains Why Wonder Woman Worked

Rian Johnson took to Twitter to explain briefly why Wonder Woman turned out to be so good. Check out what he had to say below.

Wonder Woman is easily DC Comics’ best movie in a long time. Patty Jenkins made an incredible superhero movie and it proved once and for all that female-led superhero movies can work. Speaking of female-led blockbusters, Star Wars: The Last Jedi’s director took to Twitter to briefly detail why Wonder Woman worked. Check out his tweet below.

This whole debate spawned from Rian Johnson sharing Michael Green’s (Amercian Gods) thoughts on why Wonder Woman worked so well while other films in the DCEU failed so spectacularly. Here’s what Amercian Gods’ writer had to say on the matter:

So many studios and property rights holders have seen the success of Marvel, which we all adore and wonder how to replicate it. For me, the lesson of Marvel is: you don’t begin by building a universe. You begin by telling a story worth telling. And if it is a great story directed well and performed brilliantly and stays with people, it will become the black hole around which a galaxy can form. If you begin by trying to build the universe before creating a film worth watching, well, there be dragons. At no point in the creation of this story or script did anyone talk about spin-offs or how might things continue. It was always: what’s our story and make sure you have a story that is worth the title.

So it all boils down to how Patty Jenkins concentrated on making a good film as opposed to kickstarting a cinematic universe, which DC’s previous movies have been obsessed with. DC has desperately been trying to catch up with Marvel, whereas they should have been making good standalone movies which can then constitute a shared cinematic universe. This makes perfect sense, and it was all summed up brilliantly in Rian Johnson’s tweet: “WW [Wonder Woman] was a movie that connected with audiences, because the movie worked. No property/character/world is a self working magic trick.”

Patty Jenkins will be directing Wonder Woman 2 which is set for a 2019 release. Fingers crossed DC and Warner Bros. will just let her make yet another fantastic movie. As for Rian Johnson, he’s got a small, independent movie coming out in December called Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
