Star Wars: The Last Jedi’s Rian Johnson Explains Why He Handled Rey’s Parentage The Way He Did

Rian Johnson has explained why he decided to tackle the mystery of Rey’s parentage the way he did in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

WARNING: There are SPOILERS for Star Wars: The Last Jedi in this article.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi has sparked a lot of debate on the Internet. Before Rian Johnson’s film came to cinemas people were frantically coming up with their own fan theories on who Snoke is, why Luke went into exile and most of all, who Rey’s parents are. Many people speculated that she must either be related to Obi-Wan Kenobi or Luke Skywalker. Some people even floated the idea that she was Emperor Palpatine’s granddaughter. However, if you’ve seen The Last Jedi (and I hope you all have by now) you’ll know that Rey’s parentage is pretty much insignificant to the bigger picture.

Rian Johnson decided against having Rey related to a well-known Star Wars lineage. Instead, he opted to show that she can become a powerful Jedi and an important character in the Star Wars universe without having Skywalker or Kenobi blood flowing through her veins. Check out the comments he made on this subject whilst appearing on The Empire Film Podcast in the video below.

I do understand why many people were left feeling more than a bit upset about the way Rey’s parentage was handled, yet what Johnson did was ensure that the Star Wars franchise had longevity. How long could it possibly go on for if every single character explored in this space saga was related to a handful of families? I can tell you that it wouldn’t last that long.

I also personally like the central message that Rian Johnson puts into his film. He’s basically saying that it doesn’t matter where you come from, you can still make a difference regardless of your heritage. I’m looking forward to seeing what J.J. Abrams does with Star Wars: Episode IX and where he decides to take our now new crop of beloved Star Wars characters.
