Did This Promotional Cup Offer Our First Glimpse At Alden Ehrenreich’s Han Solo In Solo: A Star Wars Story?

It looks like a promotional cup may have given us our first glimpse as Alden Ehrenreich has Han Solo in Ron Howard’s Solo: A Star Wars Story.

Solo: A Star Wars Story hasn’t been the smoothest production ever. This seems to be a bit of a common trend with these Star Wars spin-off movies. Phil Lord and Chirs Miller were the film’s original directors, however, they were forced to leave the project due to creative differences. Lucasfilm then hired Ron Howard to replace them and it’s been reported that he reshot 80% of the movie which meant that the film ended up costing two times more than they had originally intended it to. It’s a shame that we’ll never get to see Lord and Miller’s vision for the Han Solo spin-off, yet Howard is a very capable director and I’m pretty certain that Lucasfilm and Kathleen Kennedy know what they’re doing when it comes to these Star Wars movies.

Alden Ehrenreich will be playing the young Han Solo, a role famously brought to life by Harrison Ford, and we’ve now got our first look at the young actor as the iconic rogue smuggler all thanks to a promotional cup of all things. This is a rather unconventional way to first see an actor in character, yet I don’t think the reveal was intended to go. It seems more like an accidental leak to me. Have a look at Ehrenreich’s Han Solo on the cup in the tweets below.

Ehrenreich’s Solo isn’t quite the spitting image of Harrison Ford’s, that said, he seems to share the same cocky confidence of everybody’s favourite Star Wars character. Ehrenreich was the first person that Lord and Miller auditioned for the role, but they ended up casting millions of young actors before deciding that none of them were quite as good as him. Ehrenreich first’s role was in an episode of Supernatural, yet my first experience of him was as the loveable actor Hobie Doyle in the Coen brothers’ Hail, Ceasar!.

This isn’t the first time an actor appeared in a Coen Brothers picture before being cast in a Star Wars movie. Both Adam Driver and Oscar Isaac appeared in Inside Llewyn Davis before being cast as Kylo Ren and Poe Dameron respectively in Star Wars: The Force AwakensDomhnall Gleeson was also the in Coen brothers’ remake of True Grit before being cast as General Hux in this new Star Wars saga.

Solo: A Star Wars Story will also star Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian, Woody Harrelson as Beckett, who will be Han’s mentor, Emilia Clarke as Kira, Thandie Newton, Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Joonas Suotamo, who’ll be taking over from Peter Mayhew as Chewbacca.

Ron Howard’s Solo: A Star Wars Story is set to hit UK cinemas on May 25th, 2018.
