Nintendo Confirms That The Super Mario Movie Is Definitely Happening With Illumination

It’s official. Nintendo has confirmed that Illumination, the people behind the minions, will make a Super Mario animated movie. What do you think of that?

A while back we heard rumours that Nintendo and Illumination were looking to make a Super Mario movie together. These were rumours, and nothing was confirmed, that is, until now. Illumination is the Paris-based animation studio behind the Despicable Me movies and the people who created the minions (thanks a lot, guys). They’ll now be looking to bring the Super Mario Bros. (Mario and Luigi) and the rest of the characters we’ve become so familiar with over the years to the big screen.

This news comes from The Wall Street Journal, and it looks like the movie will be set inside the video games’ many worlds. It sounds like they’ll be taking a leaf out of Disney’s book who gave us Wreck-It Ralph back in in 2013. That film demonstrated that good video games could be made, unfortunately, Wreck-It Ralph wasn’t specifically based on a video game property, although it did feature a whole host of well-known video game characters such as Sonic the Hedgehog and Mario’s notorious foe, Bowser.

Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battles was a perfect collaboration

There’s no news on who will be directing the movie, but this confirmation is a big step forward for Nintendo who have been very cagey about licensing their characters. This attitude can be traced back to the terrible Super Mario Bros. Movie back in 1993. However, they’ve recently been more open to collaborating with other companies.Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle is a recent example of that newfound openness. It saw Nintendo work with Ubisoft on a video game mashup between Mario and Ubisoft’s Minion-esc Rabbids (although, the Rabbids came first, so maybe it would be better to say that the Minions are Rabbid-esc…). Could this Super Mario Movie be the first film to buck the bad video game movie curse? We’ll have to wait and see.

There’s no word yet on who’ll be directing or when the film will come out, but we do know that Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto and Chris Meledandri will produce the movie.
