Is Mel Gibson the Right Person To Direct Suicide Squad 2?

With rumours circulating the Internet that Warner Bros. is looking at Mel Gibson to direct Suicide Squad 2, here at Small Screen, we’re asking ourselves whether he’s really the right man for the job?

Mel Gibson has managed to get himself back into Hollywood’s good-books recently with the release of his Oscar nominated film, Hacksaw Ridge, and of course the question of whether he’ll get to direct a superhero movie has come up. Hollywood loves a good redemption story, and Gibson’s is certainly an interesting one. The ultimate ending of a Hollywood redemption story is being offered the chance to either star in a superhero blockbuster, or it seems to direct one. It looks like Warner Bros. is courting Mel Gibson to direct Suicide Squad 2.

Will Mel Gibson be in charge of Suicide Squad 2?

Y’all jokers must be crazy!

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. and Mel Gibson are already in discussions regarding the possibility of the Australian actor/director to helm the project. It’s unfortunate since the first Suicide Squad movie was most certainly not the film that David Ayer wanted to make, and I would have liked to see him get a second crack at the new comic book movie franchise. However, he’s already signed on to direct Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn spin-off movie, which sounds interesting. However, the question remains, should Mel Gibson be the one to direct Suicide Squad 2?

Honestly, I would have to say no, because his style of directing wouldn’t help the franchise to move forward. One of the big problems with the first movie was it’s chaotic editing and poor character development. Gibson’s films, including Hacksaw Ridge, to tend to be incredibly frantic affairs (Apocalypto is definitely the work of a mad man). There’s also the question of his gender politics. There were far too many shots of Margot Robbie’s behind in the first movie, and DC and Warner Bros. need to hire someone who can change the rather sexist nature of their movies. Mel Gibson is not that person.

With the world so set on tearing itself apart, it don’t seem like such a bad thing to me to want to put a little bit of it back together.

Gibson certainly knows how to direct action sequences, and I’m sure if he got the chance to do Suicide Squad 2, that it’ll arguably have some of the best fight sequences ever seen in a comic book film, but that’s not all that counts. Suicide Squad had so much potential, and they need to find a director who’ll be able to properly portray the not-so-bad bad guys onscreen. I’d suggest someone like Drew Goddard, Alex Garland, Alfonso Gomez-Rejon, David Robert Mitchell or Jennifer Kent to direct the sequel. A relatively young director, who’s able to develop their characters properly and has already proven him or herself in the independent movie scene.
