Mark Hamill Disagreed With Rian Johnson’s Choices for Luke in The Last Jedi’s Script

Mark Hamill recently revealed that when he first got Rian Johnson’s script for Star Wars: The Last Jedi he “fundamentally” disagreed with every decision he took for Luke Skywalker. Check out what he said below.

Mark Hamill’s always been pretty open with his fans and in his interviews. He must be a bit of a nightmare for Disney’s PR team. He doesn’t tend to spoil things, but he does enjoy teasing his adoring fans on Twitter. Well, Hamill’s been at it again, this time revealing to Vanity Fair that when he first read Rian Johnson’s script for Star Wars: The Last Jedi he “fundamentally” disagreed with every decision the script took with Luke Skywalker.

During the interview, Hamill highlighted his feelings after having read Rian Johnson’s script for Star Wars: Episode VIII, otherwise known as The Last Jedi. Safe to say that they weren’t 100 percent positive. “I at one point had to say to Rian, ‘I pretty much fundamentally disagree with every choice you’ve made for this character. Now, having said that, I have gotten it off my chest, and my job now is to take what you’ve created and do my best to realize your vision,’” he told Vanity Fair’s David Kamp.

However, this does not mean we should all start to panic and claim that The Last Jedi will be rubbish. Much the contrary. Mark Hamill is an actor, he’s not necessarily the world’s best script writer or director. Johnson has a proven track record of penning and directing fascinating feature films, just watch Brick, Looper and his three episodes of Breaking Bad for confirmation of that fact. Maybe don’t watch The Brothers Bloom, it’s not his best effort.

Hamill went on to highlight during the interview that he loves how both The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi have turned out, and even admitted that he’s full of bad ideas. He just likes to have his voice heard. “I have thousands of really terrible ideas I would love to share with you, among which you might—just law of averages—find a nugget of something and go, ‘That’s not as terrible as the other 35 you just told us.’ ”

So the bottom line is that Mark Hamill is proud of how The Last Jedi has turned out, yet he just wanted to get his voice heard during the creative process of devising the script for the film. People will have disagreements, but I for one have nothing but faith in Johnson and the people at Disney and Lucasfilm. They delivered something special with The Force Awakens, and hopefully they can go one better with The Last Jedi.
