Kathleen Kennedy Would Love For Taika Waititi To Direct A Star Wars Movie

Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy has revealed that she would love for Thor: Ragnarok’s Taika Waititi to direct a Star Wars movie.

Taika Waititi is so hot right now. After having directed Thor: Ragnarok which received rave reviews (including from us), all of Hollywood’s biggest movie studios want to work with him. Yet, they don’t come much bigger than Lucasfilm these days. It turns out that Lucasfilm’s President, Kathleen Kennedy, is pretty keen to get him onboard a Star Wars project.

During an interview with Newshub, Kennedy was asked whether she would like Taika Waititi to direct a Star Wars movie, to which she answered: “Well, I would love for him to direct a Star Wars movie.” She continued: “I think he has exactly the right sensibility. It was very exciting to see him step into the Marvel universe and do such an amazing job with Thor.”

She ended the interview by telling the interview to “let him know”. It’s a well-known fact that all New Zealanders know one another so I’m pretty sure she’ll be able to let Waititi know of Kennedy’s interest (I’m being ironic of course).

This does open up a larger debate. Would a director like Waititi really suit a studio like Lucasfilm and more importantly, would he work well with Kennedy? Before Ron Howard came onto the project, Solo: A Star Wars Story was being helmed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller. They’re very well known for their improvisational approach to filmmaking and that was apparently one of the main reasons behind their firing. Kennedy wanted them to stick to the script, yet that’s not the way Lord and Miller do things.

Waititi has a very similar approach to filmmaking. A lot of Thor: Ragnarok was improvised, which is one of the reasons why it’s so funny. I’m not totally sure whether a move to the Star Wars universe for Waititi would be a good idea. It’s a nice thought and one which many people will be asking for from now on, yet I believe that Waititi is best to stick with Marvel. He’s already spoken about wanting to come back for Thor 4 and even direct a Black Widow movie. He seems to work well with Marvel Studios and Kevin Feige. I’m not sure whether he and Kennedy would see eye to eye.

What do you think? Should Waititi direct a Star Wars movie? Let us know in the comments below.
