James Gunn Wants to Explore Rocket Raccoon’s Horrible Origins Story in the MCU

James Gunn has expressed his desire to explore Guardians of the Galaxy’s Rocket Raccoon’s harrowing origins story in future Marvel movies. We say, bring it on!

James Gunn has made secret of the fact that Rocket Raccoon is his favourite Guardian. He’s reiterated that fact on multiple occasions. He’s obviously a fan of the character’s wit, his sweet relationship with Groot, and most of all, his devastating backstory. Rocket Raccoon is a genetically modified raccoon. He was basically born in a lab and tortured to the point of madness. This fact we already know from the movies, however he never goes into much detail about that time in his life. Well, things are going to change on that front since James Gunn has expressed his interest in exploring the character’s disturbing origins story.

Whilst he was attending HASCON, Hasbro’s first toy convention, Gunn promised that Rocket’s dark and depressing backstory will be explored in future Marvel movies. “We are going to learn more about where Rocket comes from in the coming sagas,” Gunn began (via MCU Exchange). “It’s going to be a little different from the comics. We already know a lot about from where he came from. It’s a little bit more horrible than what it is in the comics when you come down to it. We will learn more about that.”

This news shouldn’t come much as a surprise since Rocket’s tragic backstory has been eluded to on multiple occasions during the previous two Guardians movies and we really shouldn’t be shocked at the revelation that Gunn wants to delve into his story even further. James Gunn is currently writing the script to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which he says will set t he scene for the next phase in the MCU (Marvel movies going full cosmic perhaps?). On not a completely unrelated note, James Gunn is still not sure whether he’ll include Nathan Fillion in Guardians Vol. 3. We really hope he decides to finally give the actor a proper Marvel cameo.
