Guillermo Del Toro’s The Shape Of Water Leads The Academy Awards With 13 Nominations

Guillermo Del Toro’s latest picture, The Shape Of Water, received the most nominations at this year’s Academy Awards with a grand total of 13.

The 90’s Academy Awards is looking to be one of the most intriguing we’ve seen for a while with no real clear-cut winner. Last year it was basically a two-film-race between La La Land and Moonlight which culminated in one of the most bizarre announcement, or should I say fake announcements, for the winner of Best Picture ever seen in Oscars history. This year, however, isn’t quite as easy to predict. The award for Best Picture, for instance, could go to any of the nine nominees.

The Shape Of Water, Dunkirk, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, The Post, Get Out, Lady Bird, Darkest Hour, Call Me By Your Name and Phantom Thread could all come away with the award. Trying to predict this year’s winner isn’t going to be easy, but if the other awards ceremonies are anything to go by Guillermo Del Toro’s The Shape Of Water is the current favourite. The Mexican director’s movie has been nominated for a total of 13 awards at this year’s Oscars. He was only nominated once before for his work on Pan’s Labyrinth script.

Christopher Nolan gets his first ever Best Director Academy Award nomination for Dunkirk.

Christopher Nolan gets his first ever Best Director Academy Award nomination for Dunkirk.

Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk is this year’s second most nominated movie with 8 (it’s the British director’s first-ever Best Director nomination). Martin McDonagh’s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri rounds up the top three with seven nominations.

Del Toro’s The Shape Of Water is in with a shout of becoming the film to win the most Oscars ever. The current record is 11, a number held by a few films such as Titanic, Ben-Hur and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.

The 90th Academy Awards will take place on Sunday, March 4th. You can see the full list of 2018’s Oscar nominees here. Who do you think will be coming away with Awards on the night? Let us know in the comments below.
