Gareth Edwards’ Monsters Is Being Adapted Into A TV Series

Gareth Edwards’ incredible debut flick, Monsters, is being adapted into a television show by British Broadcasters, Channel Four.

I absolutely love Gareth Edwards’ debut film Monsters. I think it’s a sweet love story told against the backdrop of an apocalyptic world in the midst of an alien invasion. I watched it for the first time at the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland where I actually got to meet the director himself after the screening, which took place outside in the pouring rain, thunder and lightning which just added to my enjoyment of the movie. I asked Edwards afterwards what he was thinking of doing next to which he answered, “I kind of have an idea of doing a Star Wars movie but just with droids told from their perspective.” And then he went on to direct Rogue One: A Star Wars Story which I also loved.

Monsters starred Scoot McNairy, an American photojournalist who had to help his boss’ daughter (played by McNairy’s real-life wife, Whitney Able) back to the U.S. by going through Mexico’s traitorous infected zone full of nasty and dangerous alien creatures. Edwards went on to direct the incredible Godzilla and the much-loved Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and has cemented his place as one of Hollywood’s most promising young directors. He also had a brief acting cameo in Rian Johnson’s The Last Jedi.

Now, according to Deadline, Monsters is being turned into a TV show by U.K. broadcasters, Channel Four. It’ll be produced by Vertigo Films and Edwards will have a hand in the series which will most likely be as a producer. There was a second Monsters movie made, Monsters: Dark Continent, but I didn’t see it so I can’t really offer any insight apart to say that it wasn’t very well received.

Top Boy’s creator Ronan Bennett will be the show’s showrunner and the series will be penned by young British writers Daniel Fajemisin-Duncan and Marlon Smith. The show is said to be a “big-budget drama” and “will follow a similar path as its Philip K. Dick adaptation Electric Dreams, which is set to launch on Amazon, and Kudos sci-fi thriller Humans, which is a co-pro with AMC.” Apparently, they are looking to make a deal with Netflix and/or Amazon to help distribute the series.
