EGX 2017 Day 1 Round-Up: The Top 5 Video Games You Have To Play

We are at EGX this week and we’ve been getting to play some pretty cool video games. Here’s our five favourite games from Day 1 of the conference.

Day 1 of EGX is over, and we saw a lot of brilliant games across the day. Several developers were kind enough to give us an interview, so we’ll be posting a few of those over the next week, along with our in-depth thoughts on the games that we played, but for now, here are our top five picks from EGX Day 1 that you have to see.

Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom

EGX 2017 Day 1 round-up, our Top 5 picks you have to see 2

Ni No Kuni 2 is a real blast

Ni No Kuni II is a charming role-playing game from Level-5. Don’t be fooled by its childish appearance – the vistas in this game are absolutely gorgeous and showcase some of the best visuals that the PlayStation 4 has to offer, and the soundtrack is truly wonderful and will have you up on your feet daydreaming about fighting monsters. Despite the II in the name, the story in this game doesn’t follow on from the previous games and features an entirely new protagonist, so it’s a great entry point for the series. You can find the game in the PlayStation section.

Call of Duty: WWII

EGX 2017 Day 1 round-up, our Top 5 picks you have to see

Call of Duty World War II is well worth playing

The latest instalment of the Call of Duty franchise takes the series away from the realm of sci-fi and back to its roots as we return to the Second World War. With no wall-running or jet-packs, Call of Duty: WWII feels like the old school shooter we all fell in love with, but with some major changes for the better. Perhaps controversially, class customisation has been replaced by a class system wherein you pick from five classes and level up in those classes to unlock new gear for that class (similar to Battlefield), and health no longer regenerates out of combat. Time will tell whether the game will live up to World at War, but it’s looking promising. You can play Call of Duty: WWII at the huge in your face Call of Duty stand (it’s pretty hard to miss).

Oh My Godheads

EGX 2017 Day 1 round-up, our Top 5 picks you have to see 3

Oh my God! Oh My Godheads is so good!

This bonkers co-op brawler is a brilliant little game from Titutech, wherein four players fight it out to capture the Godhead (a big head with magical powers that tries to kill you) and bring it back to their base. With game modes ranging from Capture the Flag to Free For All, you’ll have hours of fun with this charming hack ‘n slash caper, but be sure to try it with friends for maximum hilarity. You can find Oh My Godheads in the Square Enix Collection in the Rezzed area.

Augmented Empire

EGX 2017 Day 1 round-up, our Top 5 picks you have to see 4

Augmented Empire had us hooked!

Augmented Empire is the game that Samsung Gear VR needed. VR on mobile has often been derided and deemed as inferior to the higher cost headsets like Oculus Rift and PSVR, but Augmented Empire proves that virtual reality can be immersive on the Gear and that compelling stories can be told. Augmented Empire takes place in a dystopian future where society has been split into different tiers based on their wealth, and blends together a tactical shooter and RPG elements seamlessly. You can find Augmented Empire in the Rezzed section.

Lightseekers Trading Card Game

EGX 2017 Day 1 round-up, our Top 5 picks you have to see 1

Lightseekers is something to look out for

Lightseekers is an action-adventure toy game (in the vein of Skylanders), but where it really shines is that its parts can be also played as standalone games. While Lightseekers hasn’t launched yet, the trading card game is has gone live and it’s just a lot of fun. You can find Lightseekers near the food hall.

That’s it from us for now, stay tuned for our Day 2 highlights tomorrow!
