Charlize Theron Reveals That An Atomic Blonde Sequel Is In The Works

Charlize Theron, the star of Atomic Blonde, has said that they’re working on a sequel to the female-led action movie.

Atomic Blonde was a movie I was really looking forward to at the time. I loved the idea of a kickass female-led action movie starring the always incredible Charlize Theron alongside the equally brilliant James McAvoy, directed by one of John Wick’s co-directors, David Leitch. Alas, the film was a bit of a letdown. Personally, I found it a bit stale. There just wasn’t much plot for me to really latch onto, which was a shame since it had so much promise. However, I will say that I loved the neon lighting (I’m a real sucker for neon).

That said, the film did relatively well at the box office, and there’s an appetite for a John Wick-esque movie led by a woman. Atomic Blonde was almost there for me, but not quite. However, there’s certainly room to expand and this could end up becoming quite a lucrative franchise for Theron.

During an interview with IndieWire, the actress was asked whether we could expect an Atomic Blonde sequel, to which she answered: “We’re working on a sequel.” Short and to the point. I like it. There’s never any messing about with Theron. However, I can’t help but think this is the wrong vehicle for her to pursue.

Despite all the issues with Tom Hardy and the problematic shoot, I felt that her performance and character in Mad Max: Fury Road was far more exciting and far more deserving of a sequel than her Atomic Blonde super spy. We’ve seen so many films like Atomic Blonde (John Wick 1,2, and the upcoming 3 for instance). I just think it’s a shame to leave such a well-rounded character like Imperator Furiosa behind.

Theron has been showing a real flair for action movies, having starred in Mad Max: Fury Road, then Fast & Furious 8 and finally Atomic Blonde. I hope she keeps it up because she’s a really captivating screen presence and lends herself well to the action genre.
