Blade Runner 2049’s Trailer Will Send Shivers Down Your Spine

Blade Runner 2049’s first full-length trailer is here and it sent shivers down my spine. Here’s why…

When it was first announced that Blade Runner was going to get a sequel, I was more than a bit skeptical. Yet, then Denis Villeneuve came on board to direct, who’s previous work includes Sicario, Prisoners, and my favourite film of last year, Arrival. Things just started getting better from that point on. Harrison Ford would be reprising his role as Rick Deckard and Ryan Gosling was cast as the film’s lead. The cast also includes the likes of Jared Leto, Robin Wright and Guardians of the Galaxy’s Dave Bautista.

Where Ridley Scott’s film really succeeded was in its incredible ability to create a futuristic world that was simultaneously familiar and alien. We could tell that it was set on Earth, but it felt distant, strange, eerie and unlike anything depicted on the big screen before. Scott had expanded upon what he had created in his 1979 film Alien, which I see as a masterpiece. You could almost think of the two films being set in the same universe.

Judging by this trailer, Denis Villeneuve has recaptured that same aesthetic. This looks, feels and sounds very much like a sequel to Blade Runner, a continuation of the original story. In many respects, I’m glad that Scott passed the keys onto to someone like Villeneuve, since he’s the type of director who will be able to do something unique, yet in keeping which the film that came before it. Moreover, Scott’s last few films, The Martian withstanding, haven’t been as good as the films he made during the 80s, and I’d be slightly worried if he was in the driving seat of this particular project.

Villeneuve has already demonstrated that he’s comfortable in the sci-fi genre, and he’s not affraid of directing big names. His previous films have included the likes of Hugh Jackman, Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, Emily Blunt, Benicio Del Toro and Jake Gyllenhaal. They are all household names, and he’s got fine performances out of all of them, I’d even go so far as to say career best performances.

Could we see something similar with Blade Runner 2049? Will Harrison Ford and Ryan Gosling deliver career best, even Oscar worthy performances? It’s far too early to say, yet thanks to this trailer, I for one am officially excited to see this movie.

Blade Runner 2049 will be hitting cinemas in the UK on October 6th 2017.
