Amazon Is Officially Making A Lord Of The Rings TV Show Which Will Be A Prequel

Amazon has made it official guys! They’re going to make a Lord of the Rings TV show and it’ll be a prequel to the movies.

Lord of the Rings is huge, yet people we left feeling a little bit cheated after Peter Jackson’s subpar Hobbit trilogy. It was no way near as good as his original movies and I honestly wish they had somehow let Guillermo Del Toro deliver his initial vision, which was only going to be a two-movie arc. Instead, Jackson had to step in due to Studio issues and was forced to make it a trilogy, despite the book only being a few pages long.

Last week we heard rumours that Amazon Studios was working on a Lord of the Rings TV show, yet today we’ve learnt that it’s officially happening. The online retailers/Hollywood Studio has announced that it has succeeded in acquiring the global television rights to the iconic Lord of the Rings franchise and that they will be making a multiple season TV shows. This ‘huge’ (as a certain President Trump might say) deal also incorporates spin-off TV shows. These new TV shows will be produced in cooperation with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, book publisher HarperCollins and Warner Bros. Entertainment’s New Line Cinema.

Amazon Studios’ press release came with a little description of what to expect from their new show which confirmed that it’ll be set in Middle Earth and will take place before the events of Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring. Amazon’s new head of scripted, Sharon Tal Yguado had this to say about their new acquisition:

The Lord of the Rings is a cultural phenomenon that has captured the imagination of generations of fans through literature and the big screen. We are honored to be working with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins and New Line on this exciting collaboration for television and are thrilled to be taking The Lord of the Rings fans on a new epic journey in Middle Earth.”

Matt Galsor, a representative for the Tolkien Estate and Trust and HarperCollins also had a few words to add regarding the new deal:

“We are delighted that Amazon, with its longstanding commitment to literature, is the home of the first-ever multi-season television series for The Lord of the Rings. Sharon and the team at Amazon Studios have exceptional ideas to bring to the screen previously unexplored stories based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s original writings.”

It sounds like Amazon Studios is gearing up to make the one TV show to rule them all. Some may say that this new Lord of the Rings prequel series will ‘dwarf’ all other shows ever made (yeah, I’m looking at you, Game of Thrones). I wonder whether Sean Bean will get to star in this new TV show? At least if he does we’ll know that he won’t die in it.

There’s no word on when you can expect the first episode of this new show to air, yet don’t expect to be sitting down to watch it anytime soon.
